Day’s own drawing of sym, written to a cache file and answered as a path.
Backends that load icons from files (Qt’s SVG icon engine, gdk-pixbuf) can then use the shared
fallback through the loader they already have, instead of each growing a way to rasterize a
path string. Written once per symbol per process; a failure to write answers None and the
caller falls back to a label.
